Deeply Rooted

Deeply Rooted

As an homage to its past as the owner’s childhood home, this old three-bedroom apartment, bequeathed from the owner’s parents, was redesigned to reflect the owner's deep-rooted memories. Inspired by the Japanese appreciation for spaces, this apartment features the ins and outs of a home that puts privacy, light, and shadow into spaces, forms, and textures.

Deeply Rooted – View from the dining area towards the living room, where a timber screen gently separates the two spaces while maintaining visual continuity throughout the home.
Deeply Rooted – Detail of the timber screen and softly illuminated ledge, creating a layered transition between the dining and living areas.
Deeply Rooted – View through the timber screen towards the dining space, revealing the openness and connectivity of the home's communal areas.

Entering through the foyer, one is immediately greeted by the filtered light that seeps through a full-height screen that separates the main living space for a more private entry. A combination of reeded glass and timber strips filters the direct sunlight during the day, creating an interplay of light and shadow as you enter. This also creates privacy from the main entryway, blocking views from the neighbours into the apartment.
